Debbie Chapman's modern and evocative paintings show life in an original and colourful light. Her figurative approach combines the use of geometric detail such as circles with traditional drawing techniques. She particularly explores space and composition, using colour with an understanding of how it can enhance the structure of a painting. As a result the paintings are an investigation of the void between the real and the surreal and are best described as contemporary realist.
Growing up by the sea in Duncannon, Co. Wexford, Debbie began painting at an early age and at sixteen won the Wexford Proloco Adult Art Competition.
Although her primary interest was in fine art and painting, the need to earn a living led to a ten-year stint in commercial art in London. Her sense of colour and design, her flair for the telling image, led to her appointment as head graphic design consultant in London’s Jevons Brown. Still continuing to paint in her spare time, her paintings were hung in Covent Garden Galleries and the Camden Art Centre
Despite her success, Debbie gave up commercial art to return to her first love, painting. She moved back to Ireland and is now a full time artist. |
